Fort Mill celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day
They packed Martin Luther King Drive to march in honor of Dr. King’s legacy.
“The fundamental message is hope and the essence of hope and Dr. King’s legacy”, keynote speaker at Assistant Vice PROVOST of admissions at Binghamton University Randall Edouard said.
FREMONT- Bitterly cold temperatures forced the cancellation of a march to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., but about 70 people packed the First Presbyterian Church on Monday for a breakfast honoring the late civil rights leader.

Fritz Erickson, president said, “When we find ways in which we come together, that we help and support one another, I think those are very, very important ideals”.
Mae Parker-Harris, a co-organizer for the annual march, noted they have been conducting the marches for some two decades with a specific goal and objective.
Randolph promised to keep coming to the Statehouse until King’s dream comes its full meaning in a state where there are wide gaps in education achievement between school districts in rich, White communities and poorer, Black ones, and where the governor and Republican-dominated Legislature have refused to take federal money to expand Medicaid.
The Martin Luther King Day Celebration at the library featured poetry reading, singing and other tributes to King.
“We need to just unite on a common objective and just keep working together to get equal rights, equal pay for women”, said Carolina Fonseca.
Members of the San Antonio community brought their families, their friends, their church organizations, you name it. Thousands walked, many arm in arm, from the MLK Academy to the park, almost three miles.
“…Because he let us have freedom”, said Norie Harvey, a 6-year-old Girl Scout participating in the parade. “… Our nation has made large strides, but there is still a ways to go before we end racism”.
“Martin Luther King is such a big part of the black experience”, said Jennifer Latimore, the Bronzeville Arts Ensemble’s Artistic Associate. The California Highway Patrol says 25 people were arrested.
But even in the winter chill, everyone I spoke to said nothing could stop them from being out here. “We can get more done non-violently than we can with violence”.
