Victoria Azarenka beats Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open
Murray’s wife, Kim, is due to give birth to their next child next month, and the two-time major victor said he’d miss a match in any round to be there if she goes into labor. Nigel Sears, 58, collapsed at Rod Laver Arena during Ivanovic’s match with Madison Keys, and needed emergency treatment as the shocked players and thousands of fans looked on.
Ivanovic (20) was leading 6-4 1-0 before the match was delayed by nearly an hour after Sears – father-in-law to Andy Murray – collapsed in the stands at Rod Laver Arena.
Muguruza finished with 32 unforced errors as she produced a disappointing display on her way to defeat by Strycova.
Ivanovic led 3-0 in the final set before allowing Keys to come back to win the match.
Garbine Muguruza, left, of Spain congratulates Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic following their third round match at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016.
Azarenka was just warming up and she began turning on the style with some blistering forehands and effective net work to break again in the fourth game and again in the seventh.
The 14th-seeded Azarenka, back in form after two injury-interrupted seasons, has dropped just five games in three matches at Melbourne Park after warming up with a title at the Brisbane International.
No. 3 Garbine Muguruza lost to unseeded Barbara Strycova in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
No. 9 Karolina Pliskova fell to No. 21 Ekaterina Makarova similarly, in a 6-3, 6-2 straight set loss.
Makarova, seeded 21st, has a decent record in Melbourne, having reached the quarter-finals in 2012 and 2013, as well as the semi-finals past year.
She will next play No. 48-ranked Barbora Strycova, who upset third-seeded Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-2.
Keys’ performance was somewhat erratic against Ivanovic. The crowd was wonderful tonight!
– Fired-up -Despite her billing, Muguruza also found the going tough in the second round against Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.
Asked if she was feeling unwell on court, the Spaniard said she “felt with not so much energy, that’s for sure”. She was unpredictable and surprised me with her game. “I saw her hitting some balls yesterday and she’s hitting the ball very well”, Strycova said of the Belarusian before adding that comfortably accounting for Muguruza had lifted her confidence. I guess also I didn’t feel quite good at any moment. – Muguruza laments an off-day in Melbourne.
“I will do anything I can, anything, to be able to not just beat Serena, but to win Wimbledon”, Azarenka said after that Wimbledon defeat.
“The score doesn’t really tell the whole story sometimes”. – In-form Azarenka insists she has further room for improvement.
“If you think about it, it’s my 12th year being here in Australian Open”.
It was all the more remarkable as Strycova has only once ventured past the third round once in 38 grand slam tournaments. For the women, No. 7 Angelique Kerber was the highest seed to win, beating Madison Brengle, 6-1,6-3.
With two wins in her Grand Slam debut, she has won plaudits, including from Williams.
