Reggie Jackson has heated exchange with autograph-seeking fan
I said, ‘Hey, this guy, no autographs.’ I used profanity, and told him no more autographs with profanity in it. Part of Jackson’s gripe seemed to be that he was not at the restaurant for an official signing, but was simply trying to have dinner.
The incident occurred after Jackson and other Hall of Famers attended a party at the home of Hall chairperson Jane Forbes Clark.
When the fan allegedly made a remark to instigate Jackson, he subsequently shoved the fan and began a physical altercation.
“I was signing autographs here last year at 11:00 at night”, Jackson said.
“I tried to sign a few autographs, and there was a guy in there, he tried to get another autograph on the golf course yesterday”. That’s (expletive) up. Now, it’s my time to eat dinner with people I seldom see. “It’s f***** up. Pay for them like everybody else”.
The New York Daily News reported that Jackson, in Cooperstown for the Baseball Hall of Fame’s induction weekend, was involved in what appeared to be a “heated, physical confrontation” with an autograph seeker.
“You can not touch a person”, Jackson said. See the video below, and tell us what you think.
Cooperstown police chief Michael Covert said that he was aware of the incident, but that no complaints had been filed with his department.
“Maybe these people were a little pushy, ” Jackson said, “but at the same time, I was upset because it was kind of an over-and-over thing”. You don’t touch the public, in today’s world you can not do that. “He was the same guy who I had signed for on the golf course, along with a lot of other people, and who had then gone to the end of the line and had come back again”. But as far as anybody touching someone, that did not come from me. Martin pulled him from the game in the middle of an inning and when Jackson entered the dugout, Martin immediately confronted him. Even though Jackson has a reputation for being moody sometimes when it comes to interacting with the public, the account Madden gives a strong indication he was provoked.
