Students pose for pictures in T-shirts spelling racial slur
Hanks said the Desert Vista High School students were wearing shirts to spell out: “BEST*YOU’VE*EVER*SEEN*CLASS*OF*2016”.
Ironically, they wore the shirts on a day when another, larger, group of students wore shirts that formed the phrase “Best You’ve Ever Seen Class of 2016”.
The site noted that in February of 2014, a black teacher by the name of Dr. Cicely Cobb had filed a federal lawsuit against the Tempe Union High School District and Desert Vista High School in particular. “While we don’t discuss individual discipline, we can tell you that in addition, the obvious need for sensitivity training will be addressed”.
Note: ABC15 has edited the photos to blur the faces of the alleged students involved.
Hanks said the girls were off on their own when they took a photo and used their shirts to spell out the n-word.
A Change.org petition calling for the girls’ expulsion gained more than 10,000 signatures by Saturday afternoon.
The district also released a letter from Principal Barela, who stated that, “those actions do not represent who we are as a campus…”
Immediately the school denounced the girls’ actions.
A group of high school students are to be disciplined after they posed for this picture that spelled out a racist slur. Daily Mail reported that a heavy police presence was noted on the high school rounds following the uploading of the picture and the Phoenix Police Department confirmed the reason for their presence. I don’t think they should have done it.
Maupin said that the image should “give everyone a cause for concern” and that he looks forward to leading a meeting with the superintendent to try and prevent another situation like this happening in the future.
“The six girls in question need to be expelled from the high school and its district to understand the gravity of their actions to the fullest”.
Principal Christine Barela wrote in a letter to parents that the district wanted to make it “crystal clear that those actions are unacceptable”.
