Mayor: All city schools will be open on Monday
NY theaters canceled performances, restaurants closed and Mayor Bill de Blasio banned travel on Saturday as a blizzard affecting the U.S. East Coast hit the city harder than predicted.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has warned the worst is still yet to come. Let us know in the comments section below.
“Expect very rapid accumulation, more than in many other storms”, de Blasio said. You can monitor the city’s snow plow tracker here.
The proposal does not, however, shelter the city from almost $1 billion Gov. Andrew Cuomo suggested the state stop contributing to the City University of NY and Medicaid costs. “From delivering extra meals for homebound seniors to de-icing our roads and bridges, we are taking every step to prepare our five boroughs for the coming snowfall”. “The best thing people can do is go home, stay home”.
Governor Cuomo also directed the state Emergency Operations Center to activate in New York City and Hauppauge to monitor the storm and coordinate resource deployment.
The storm is set to arrive nearly a year to the day after New York’s subway service was shut down due to a snowstorm that largely spared New York City, a move that prompted sharp criticism.
Mr.de Blasio’s new spending added relatively little in the way of large-scale initiatives next year: about $41 million on homelessness; $62 million for mental-health initiatives; and $5.4 million to expand city ambulance service. Coastal flood warnings were issued for parts of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
However, some residents said they just couldn’t resist seeing famous monuments frosted with snow. DE authorities said Thursday afternoon that it was unclear if or when a state of emergency would be declared by the governor.
The storm’s arrival coincides with a full moon, ensuring that strong winds will combine with a high tide to produce significant flooding. “First deputy mayor Tony Shorris has been in touch with his counterparts in Albany, and also with the MTA, so there’s a high level of coordination”, Mr.de Blasio said.
About 7 inches of snow had fallen on Washington D.C. – expected to be the bullseye of the storm -snowfall amounts in nearby Maryland ranged between 4.5 inches in Baltimore and 13.5 inches in Oakland.
Why do so many people die shovelling snow?
