Police charge 17-year-old in Canada after 4 shot dead
“He knows we’re in shock and he knows the people in La Loche are good, ” said Lemaigre, whose daughter-in-law saw the shooting at the school that his grandchildren attend.
“Having a shotgun is a very important thing, because if you’re supporting your family with moose, maybe beaver pelts, deer, then you need guns”, said Mr Totten. She noted that she, herself, grew up on the trap lines and didn’t think there was much support for the group’s actions.
Levy said authorities received a call about 1 p.m. Friday saying a weapon had been discharged at La Loche Community School in La Loche.
La Loche is small, isolated community of less than 3,000 people located 600 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon. A second road leads to Fort McMurray, Alta., but it crosses ice and is only available in winter. In recent years, the village has struggled with unemployment as well as education, mental health and housing issues.
Bellegarde stressed the importance of implementing a strategy to “end violence” in indigenous communities and provide “hope” for the younger generation. “While the lockdown was happening, you could just hear all these gunshots getting closer, [then] getting distant”.
Bobby Cameron, Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, said the shooting Friday was the worst tragedy to ever hit the community.
The focus, however, must be on healing and deciding how to make the community better, he said.
Acting mayor Kevin Janvier said the tragedy has hurt everyone in La Loche.
Wood started teaching at the La Loche Community School in September.
Janvier told CTV News that the shooter was a student at the school. He said police told him the gunmen first shot two of his siblings before killing Janvier’s daughter.
In those eight minutes, two victims were fatally shot. Seven other people injured in the shooting had been hospitalized, Butterworth-Carr said. A shooting in 1992 at Concordia University in Montreal killed four.
17-year-old Dayne Fontaine and 13-year-old Drayden Fontaine were also found dead in a home.
The boy – who can not be named because of his age – is also charged with seven counts of attempted murder.
The post Teenage suspect in custody after Canada’s worst shooting in years appeared first on PBS NewsHour. The school’s Facebook page said the school was lockdowned until the Royal Canadian Police resolved the matter.
“I ran outside the school”, Noel Desjarlais, a Grade 10 student at the school, told CBC.
Attendees of the mass consoled each other outside the church on Sunday. “Four good people”, Park said after laying down flowers.
Chatlain spent Saturday evening with the family of the alleged shooter.
“We’re not blaming them….”
“We will not be allowing anyone in or out until we have a clear idea of what is going on”.
The shooting claimed the lives of two youths and two adults. “He went for school or would go for bike rides with us at times”.
