Dina Asher-Smith breaks 11-second mark for 100m at Anniversary Games
Asher-Smith, who in the last two months has run three of the four fastest times ever by a British woman, said: “I’m in the 10 seconds now so I’m absolutely over the moon”.
Dina Asher-Smith could scarcely comprehend her achievement after becoming the first British woman to break the 11-second barrier for the 100 metres.
Asher-Smith continues to improve in spectacular style, even if she could only finish fourth in the final behind Dafne Schippers.
Another athlete grabbing a British record on the morning was long jumper Shara Proctor, who leaped 6.98m in the final round of the event to better her own previous national record and personal best of 6.95m.
After the jump, she told BBC Sport: “The claps echo around the stadium, and it gave me the extra boost”. I thought I was in good shape but I didn’t realise I was in that good shape. “I still have stuff to improve, the race was a little messy”.
The 200m is also an option and she has ruled out doubling up.
“Going into Beijing, I have my fingers crossed for selection next week, but I’m really looking forward to it”. “I did not expect to jump 6.98m today”.
Johnson-Thompson, who also battled a knee problem after winning European pentathlon gold in March, said: “C onsidering the preparation I’ve had for it I’m over the moon, and the fact I’ve come out of it not injured, healthy and happy”.
Asked if she had been anxious about missing the World Championships, she said: “I was anxious about it before this competition, but now I’m completely fine”.
