West Bank girl shot dead after trying to stab guard
Only a day earlier, Israel was forced to deploy troops in order to protect the settlers from the local Palestinians, after the Jews’ attempt to move in sparked violent clashes in the flashpoint city.
The police later welded the doors of the homes shut, the photographer said. But he was certainly not the sole voice of discontent as traditionally staunch allies of Israel in the west, the U.S. and European Union, too were perturbed by the aggravating hawkish politics of Netanyahu that throw cold water all over the west-approved plans for forming two separate states.
About 150 Palestinians have been killed during the same period.
That’s why the sight of dozens of Israeli settlers with crowbars descending on two homes in the old city of Hebron is as surprising as it is disturbing.
“The government supports the settlement [project] at all times, especially in these days when it faces a terror onslaught with determination and courage”.
The examination of the purchase will begin today and “we will do it quickly”, Netanyahu said. “If it doesn’t come to an end within a week, I will make sure that a status report will be submitted to the cabinet”, said Netanyahu.
“The problem is that they are not part of the police or the army”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at Sunday’s cabinet meeting that Israel will allow the settlers evicted from two houses in Hebron on Friday to return once they can present the proper paperwork proving ownership over the buildings.
Israeli military chief of staff Gadi Eizenkot told a security conference on Monday that a crackdown, such as new restrictions on Palestinian workers, could push more Palestinians toward violence.
Criticising the evictions, three right-wing members of Netanyahu’s coalition had threatened to not vote with the government over the issue.
The families had moved in on Thursday after buying the homes from Palestinian families, the settlers said.
“People are defending themselves against assailants wielding knives who are about to stab them to death, and they shoot the people, and that’s extrajudicial killings?” he said, noting that “a knife-wielding terrorist” had also recently been shot to death in Paris. “In the case of the houses in Hebron, the law was crudely breached”.
“Settlements are important to me and I work to aid them, but I will not compromise on legal matters”, replied Ya’alon.
