State Police respond to more than 6800 calls
Virginia State Police were busy answering calls to hundreds of traffic accidents after the latest winter storm clipped the state.
“Just as state officials and law enforcement are advising Virginians to stay off the roads, we are also urging people to stay indoors”, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. High winds in some areas have now caused snow to drift and pile up across interstates and primary roads, making driving even more risky. State Police Richmond Division responded to 611 disabled vehicles while VSP Fairfax Division responded to 601 disabled vehicles. Most of those occurred in northern Virginia.
As of 7:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 24, Virginia State Police are on the scene of 5 crashes and 17 disabled vehicles.
Since Friday, VSP says its responded to a total 6,626 calls for service. The weather-related crash on Friday afternoon is the first and, so far, only traffic death attributed to the snowstorm.
Northern Virginia, police said, is significantly picking up in traffic crash and disabled vehicle reports.
Another trooper was investigating a crash on Interstate 95 in Prince William County early Thursday when police say his vehicle was struck by an out of control vehicle, but the trooper wasn’t injured. However, crashes in Augusta and Wythe counties left two victims with life-threatening injuries.
