Google Offers Free Wi-Fi Service In India’s Mumbai Central Station
By the end of the project Google hopes to have 400 stations enjoying the wireless connectivity providing the 23 million people that use the Indian train system every day with the ability to jump onto the Internet for free (to start) and enjoy high speed wireless Internet connections, fast enough to provide the connection that is capable of streaming HD movies. “In partnership with Google, we are confident of rolling out a robust, scalable service at stations in the near future”. He said free Public Wi-Fi facility will be made available at 100 of the busiest stations and later on extended to 400 stations. Now Mumbai Central has become the first ever railway station in India to have high-speed Internet facility for thousands of its passengers. Other stations will get the facility “very shortly”, it said. Google stated that four stations where free Wi-Fi service will be launched soon are: Allahabad, Patna, Jaipur and Ranchi. “While we’re thrilled to have the Wi-Fi at this station up and running, it’s really just a small first step”.
Panaji: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said that in one year at-least 100 railway stations across the country will have Google Wi-Fi.
To make this possible, Google has partnered with Indian Railways and RailTel, which provides Internet services via its extensive fiber network along many of these railway lines. Users will be able to easily stream a high definition video while they are waiting, research their destination, or save some videos for offline viewing, download a book or a new game for the journey.
“We’ve focussed on delivering a network that is at par with the high speed public Wi-Fi network that is available to users in developed countries”.
The company is committed to bringing affordable Internet access to millions of people by taking into account the fact that there are around 300 million Internet users in the country.
