What to Watch on Tuesday, Day 9 at the Australian Open
What he did on Sunday, though, was to frustrate the world No. 1 into so almost bringing about his own spectacular downfall. He makes you miss.
Radwanska knew she had a very lucky escape and she knows that the Spaniard is no pushover. Their meeting in last year’s Australian Open final was one of their closer encounters, but the outcome was just the same.
Further frustration was to come for the five-time Open champion, who stepped up only for his opponent to save 11 of 11 break points in the second set. While Federer is on a four-match winning streak against the Czech, he has lost the last two times that they have faced each other at a grand slam. Li Na saved a match point in her third-round match at the 2014 Australian Open on the way to the title.
“I was surprised it went as fast as it did”, Federer added. “I was able to do that”.
Murray’s fourth-round exit in NY was his first before a grand slam quarter-final since 2010 and now Tomic wants to inflict another upset at the same stage of the Australian Open when the two meet this morning. “Today was one of the best matches I’ve had this week”.
“That’s a good number for me, not for him, ” said Simon, looking flushed and sounding wistful after 4hours, 32 minutes of deep effort and deep thinking.
“This must be the first match I won on a challenge but it felt like a clean ball – I felt like it was on the line, I was really positive about it but I thought worst-case scenario we’re back to deuce”.
“I played good tennis, through three sets – all three sets”.
Simon starved Djokovic of pace, especially early in the match, and camped out several feet behind the baseline, making it hard for the Serbian to end points quickly. The Serb will next face Kei Nishikori after the seventh seed beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
“I was obviously pleased to win the match”. But I honestly didn’t expect to make this many unforced errors. “I’m just looking forward to that match”.
The persistent Frenchman broke Djokovic in the ninth game and took the match into a fifth set amid another flurry of Djokovic errors.
When a spectator shouted out during Djokovic’s on-court interview, the defending champion asked him to repeat what he had said.
Tsonga gave an honest assessment following his defeat to Nishikori, stating: “I think he was just better than me on the three sets”. “He knows how to play, we had a great match and a great fight”.
“It doesn’t concern me for the next one”.
Federer has now reached the last eight in Melbourne 12 times, while Berdych has featured in the quarer-finals of the tournament in each of the last six years.
The Serb took almost an hour to win the first set and his frustrations were palpable as Simon took the second on a tiebreak, ending an unbeaten sequence of 26 sets stretching back to the World Tour Finals.
“The good thing about Grand Slams is that you have a day off in between, which gives you enough time”, Djokovic said in a press conference.
“Then you’re trying to cut down on the length of the rallies, go for a victor or go for a drop-shot”. What did you say? So I’m sure I’ll be fine. “I’ve had worse situations where I had much less time to recover after long matches”.
Alas, Djokovic is through to the quarterfinals and he will face Kei Nishikori for an eighth time on Tuesday.
