MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Milos Raonic persevered with his serve-and-volley game plan, holding firm even in the deciding set against Stan Wawrinka after the 2014 Australian Open champion had rallied from two sets down to force a fifth.
Raonic rediscovered form which had taken him into a two set advantage, though, achieving the decisive break midway through the decider, sealing a 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
It appears that Raonic has found another level in his game.
The 25-year-old Raonic took the match 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3 in three hours 45 minutes.
“I feel really happy”, Azarenka said, per Stuart Fraser of the MailOnline.
Raonic becomes the first Canadian man to reach all four major quarterfinals, but will have his eye on more this week as he looks ahead to a quarterfinal with Gael Monfils.
Strycova was expected to pose Azarenka more problems having shocked third seed Garbine Mugurza in the previous round and although she hit eight more winners than the Belarusian, her 33 unforced errors proved costly.
