Teen in mass Canada school shooting makes court appearance
Friends of Alicia Fontaine, the mother of the two brothers who were shot and killed in their home, say she has been telling people that she can never hate the alleged suspect.
But before Friday, suicide was the main cause of such deaths.
While Janvier said the meeting with Wall went well, he added the community needs funding, in many areas, to improve the quality of life.
Police tracked down the suspect and pursued him through the school, eventually taking him into custody at around 1:15 p.m. No one was injured during the arrest, St. Germaine said.
The boy, who can not be named under youth criminal legislation, is also charged with seven counts of attempted murder in relation to those who were injured when he allegedly opened fire at the La Loche Community school Friday.
Two other victims, shot dead in a home before the school shooting, have been identified as 13-year-old Drayden Fontaine and his 17-year-old brother Dayne Fontaine.
La Loche is more than seven hours northwest of the nearest major city, Saskatoon.
Bellegarde stressed the importance of implementing a strategy to “end violence” in indigenous communities and provide “hope” for the younger generation. A police truck was also burned, and an ambulance badly damaged.
“No one has been paying attention to this community”, she said. “We feel sadness and remorse but rarely do we use that to fuel change”, Wood’s family said in a statement. “We really have to take some dramatic means”. RCMP said the Uxbridge, Ont. native died of his wounds shortly after arriving at the La Loche hospital.
The La Loche Community School in the aboriginal community of 3,000 houses students from grades seven through to 12. The nearest Tim Hortons restaurant, a Canadian staple, is about 60 miles away.
The provincial service centre in La Loche now has 10 workers on payroll, five help with income assistance, four are support staff and one is now a child and family resource worker. More critically, the absence of such enterprises largely limits employment to a tiny number of local businesses and to government posts or jobs at publicly funded institutions, like the clinic and schools. “At times, we sit down and we get all these nods and agreements, but then six months down the road, there’s another crisis and we’re back to square one again”.
“It’s not something you ever imagine happening here”.
Chatlain said he wanted to remind residents that the village is made up of “tremendously generous people”.
“We’re not blaming them….”
“All I heard was cops running around in the school”, she said.
A graduate of the school just two years ago, Janvier returned to work this year as a teacher’s aid.
Chief Cameron, who lives at the Witchekan Lake First Nation, south of La Loche, agreed. The town has a government-owned liquor store and two bars, despite the lack of restaurants.
Police found nine people shot. Not far to the west is Fort McMurray, Alberta, the heart of Canada’s oil sands.
“They focused on pretty basic bread and butter issues, like the lack of a proper youth centre and recreational facilities in the community, housing conditions in the community, a sense of isolation from the rest of the province and the rest of the country”, he said in the foyer of the House of Commons.
The residents of La Loche who have escaped a reliance on welfare tend to be older and follow traditional Dene methods of living off the land through hunting and fishing.
