“Revenant” cinematographer of Lithuanian descent tipped for Oscar
The Revenant is leading the Oscar race this year with 12 nominations, including best picture, supporting actor and best director.
DiCaprio, who has been nominated for best actor three times previously (The Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Wolf Of Wall Street) and once for best supporting actor (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), has never won an Oscar.
For best actress, “Carol” star Cate Blanchett and “Room” star Brie Larson, who portrayed a kidnapped mother living in captivity with her son, are seen as the favorites in a category that also includes veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years”).
Six films joined “The Revenant” and “Fury Road” as nominees for Hollywood’s top prize: “Bridge of Spies”, “Spotlight”, “The Big Short” “The Martian”, “Brooklyn” and “Room”. For example, no people of color are nominated for acting awards, while Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (The Revenant) is the only nonwhite best director nominee.
Supporting actress: Jennifer Jason Leigh, “The Hateful Eight”; Rooney Mara, “Carol”; Rachel McAdams, “Spotlight”; Alicia Vikander, “The Danish Girl”; Kate Winslet, “Steve Jobs”.
“Fury Road” has been nominated under 10 categories. Leonardo DiCaprio is all actor this Oscar season.
Critics found it to be a noticeable snub for the lead actor and director of the film “Creed”, Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler, respectively, who are both African-American.
Blanchett was nominated for her role in lesbian romance “Carol”, and Lawrence for playing the Miracle Mop inventor in “Joy”.
Leonardo Dicaprio is up for the coveted Best Actor award at next month’s Oscars and everyone thinks it’s finally going to be the actor’s year.
Straight Outta Compton received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay but didn’t earn a nod for Best Picture.
For the second consecutive year, all 20 slots went to White actors.
However, the only gong it was revealed to be in line for was Original Screenplay. Several blockbuster hits helped the company rack up 26 nominations, more than any other studio.
The Academy Awards air Sunday, February 28 with Chris Rock as host.
