Clinton, Sanders woo undecided Iowa voters as caucus nears

The previous Democratic event featuring all three candidates, a debate on January 17, was marked by sharp exchanges as Clinton and Sanders tangled repeatedly over who’s tougher on gun control, Wall Street and health care.

Clinton, a former senator and secretary of state, prefers to talk about “achievable” outcomes and douses her campaign remarks with reminders about how hard almost every fight a president takes on will be to achieve.

Clinton said that she’s interacted with scores of young supporters, and urged young people to join together and support the eventual Democratic nominee no matter who it is.

“This calls for a standing up response, let me shock everybody here”, Sanders said, surprising moderator Chris Cuomo by getting up for the first time to address the audience. “I was really touched and gratified when I saw that”.
The event fell exactly a week before Iowans go to the caucuses, and as polls find Sanders narrowing the gap against Clinton among likely caucus-goers.
She told a televised town hall meeting that Abraham Lincoln, the Republican who led the United States during the civil war and issued the proclamation freeing American slaves, was her chosen role model, overlooking her husband’s presidency. Back then, before Vice President Joe Biden had opted out of the race and before the remaining Democratic field ever took to a debate stage, Clinton topped Sanders by just 10 points.
But O’Malley said his message was simply: “Hold strong at your caucus”.
In the most recent CNN Poll of Polls, Sanders edges Clinton 46 percent to 44 percent in Iowa, with O’Malley at 4 percent. While both have warned about allowing big banks to grow so large that their collapse would damage the USA economy, Sanders views financial institutions as perhaps the biggest driver of inequality, while Clinton has stopped well short of challenging the banks’ basic functions.
For his part, Sanders again emphasized his campaign as a potential economic and political revolution in America, fingering income inequality as the great obstacle to be overcome.
“I was trying to get us to universal health care coverage, working with my husband”, Clinton continued, referring to her push for healthcare reform in the early 1990s during the Clinton administration.
