Former Detroit FBI head chosen to investigate Flint water crisis
“Former Michigan Governor, Jennifer Granholm, was well aware of the issues with the Flint Water Department, and their inability to produce contaminant free water moving forward, nor afford the equipment & technology to do so”, he reportedly wrote.
On Tuesday, another group of Chicagoans will deliver 1500 more cases of bottled water to the city, thanks to a donation from Ultra Foods.
As state and local officials continue to sort out logistics of providing water and filtration systems to residents, and Flint residents continue to adjust to living without a reliable water source, no one should have to pay for water that might harm them or their kids.
Damon’s criticisms, echoing those of Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, came just days after newly released emails from the governor’s office showed state officials belittling contaminated drinking water claims from Flint residents. The average US household of four people uses 350 gallons of water per day for drinking, bathing and washing dishes and clothes, LifeZette noted.
“We’re confident, and as long as we operate both our water treatment plant and our distribution of water out in the system, we’re confident that we’re going the best job and that the lead numbers are quite low in our system”, Bode told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.
Additionally, Attorney General Bill Schuette has assigned an independent prosecutor to investigate the Flint water crisis.
The money will go to the Community Foundation for Greater Flint to support the MI city’s recovery from lead-poisoned water.
“If you can’t drink the bad water you shouldn’t pay for it. To me it’s like a defective product”, he said.
“We were in Ethiopia together six or seven years ago and this Flint thing has reminded me of this time in this little village where these kids were collecting this water that was about the colour of chocolate milk”, he says.
The financially struggling city has been using the Flint river’s water to save money for the past two years, but the water wasn’t properly treated.
Schuette named former Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Todd Flood and retired FBI Special Agent Andrew Arena to lead the investigation. He said “a plethora of laws” potentially could be used to charge someone. Numerous protestors were disgusted with the fact they are still being billed for water service.
Virginia Tech researchers found the water was highly corrosive. But it is one entirely caused by government actors-most of them local government actors-and ignored by regulators until it was too late.
According to the Detroit News, a water expert with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified potential problems with Flint’s drinking water in February 2015, confirmed the suspicions in April, and summarized the looming problem in a June internal memo.
