Michigan AG appointed prosecutor to lead Flint water probe
Lt. Dorris Jordan of the sheriff’s office is spearheading the drive and asking for the public’s help in assisting Flint residents’ dire need for monetary donations or donations of bottled water. As a cost-saving matter, in March 2013 Flint’s all-Democratic mayor and city council voted 7-1 to obtain the city’s water from another source (Lake Huron), upon the completion of a pipeline expected to be ready in 2016.
“Our goal is 2500 cases or 60,000 bottles of water to donate to the city of Flint”, the older Redmond said.
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette launched an independent investigation into the Flint water crisis. “Gov. Snyder said he wants to make sure that no one in Flint has their water shut off, and we’re aware of potential revenue challenges”. In 2006 we attempted to craft a deal to put them on our water system. It’s been known since then that toxic amounts of lead from these pipes could be released into soft water. The group ended with a list of demands that included naming Flint a federal disaster zone, refunding all water bills since the switch of water supply in April 2014, and the immediate resignation of Governor Rick Snyder.
The population of Flint, Michigan has plummeted in the past few years.
Civil rights activists have blasted the state for its slow response and for current conditions in the city.
Hayman initially ruled the city must eliminate a 35 percent increase in water and sewer rates enacted by Mayor Dayne Walling in 2011, but eventually said the city could return to its previous rate structure.
Flood is now in private law practice. The financially troubled city was governed by a state-appointed emergency manager at the time of the change to the river water. She added that conservative estimates say the water fund will be out of cash by December.
“It’s hard to go door to door [delivering supplies]”, Dan Bartlett, Walmart’s vice president of corporate affairs, told CNNMoney.
“Our plan is to load trucks up on February 4 and on February 5 we’ll be heading up to Flint, Michigan to deliver the water”, he said.
MI taxpayers through the state legislature will pick up the tab for all this, but at this rate, the attorney general has no idea what he will pay these new hires.
He just hopes the Indianapolis community can step up to make the water multiply in time.
Some of the water tested so high for lead contamination that it was “more than twice the amount at which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies water as hazardous waste”.
But while Flint is clearly an extreme case, it is by no means alone in exposing its residents to unsafe levels of lead.
Flint returned to the Detroit system in October after elevated lead levels were discovered in children, and could tap into the new pipeline by summer.
