Periscope integrates with GoPro to bring live streaming to action cameras
The Periscope app for iOS was updated to allow for direct integration with select GoPro cameras (Hero 4 Black, Hero 4 Silver).
It’s not the first time GoPro has added live streaming abilities; it teamed up with Meerkat past year and has its own HEROcast wireless transmitter, but the former isn’t all that popular anymore and the latter is aimed at professional filmmakers.
Periscope today announced a new partnership with GoPro that combines the versatility of a GoPro camera with the real-time interactivity of Periscope.
“As a skier myself, I’ve always loved extreme sports, and I love how GoPro can show us all of the insane things these athletes can do”, Periscope iOS engineer Pablo Jablonski said.
Next, tap on the broadcast button along the bottom of the screen. The GoPro camera connects to the iPhone via WiFi, and then broadcasts the resulting feed live on the Internet. Or, if they’d rather focus entirely on the GoPro, the app offers a new switch that “freezes” the iPhone screen so users can put it in their pocket while continuing to broadcast.
Give your Periscope a name, set your privacy options, and begin streaming as you normally would.
Once the broadcast is live switching between the GoPro and iPhone camera is just a matter of a double tap. Once video mode has been enabled, open up the Periscope iOS app and start broadcasting.
Unfortunately, this Periscope/GoPro integration is only available to iPhone users, and we don’t know if it will ever be extended to the Android platform.
