Newton capitalizes on muffed punt return; Carolina leads 24-7

Today’s big NFL Playoffs 2016 NFC Championship Game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers has a scheduled start time of 6.40 p.m. ET and can be watched on TV on the Fox network.

It was one of the best and most successful seasons ever for the Arizona Cardinals, but unless you get to the Super Bowl, it ends up being all for naught.

A few hours earlier, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos outlasted New England in the AFC Championship game, and Manning is the epitome of the NFL’s prosperous Old Guard.

That includes leads of 17-0 after one quarter and 24-7 after two against Arizona.

The Carolina Panthers could not have advanced to the postseason if it was not for Cam Newton. On the ground, Jonathan Stewart had 83 yards in 19 attempts while Newton added 47 yards and two touchdowns.

Palmer was inconsistent in earning his first career playoff win in last week’s overtime thriller against Green Bay in the divisional round. “I keep saying it: We’re not finished”. His 32-yard punt return set up his darting, weaving 22-yard TD run.

Kawann Short, who led the Panthers with 11 sacks, forced one of the fumbles, while Charles Johnson knocked out the second, but they weren’t the only one hitting Palmer. But here we are, 5 years later and he is taking us to the Super Bowl. Patrick Peterson muffed a punt early in the game that was another costly turnover. The next possession was 79 yards in eight plays with Cam Newton showing in consecutive crucial plays why there is no other quarterback in the league like him and why he should be the MVP.

There were plenty more of those during the trophy celebration, and fans danced in the stands as the loudspeaker played “Shout”. The Cardinals have arguably the best group of wide receivers in the National Football League with one of the top quarterbacks in Carson Palmer.

Arizona looked set to cut the Carolina advantage before halftime after Peterson intercepted an overthrown Newton pass and ran it back 72 yards.
