Apple Watch 2 to Enter Mass Production in 2Q16?
While a date has yet to be locked down, production is said to begin in Q2 2016. Sources add that although Apple considered Foxconn as a second manufacturer for the Watch 2 (Inventec and Wistron too, according to early reports), orders will not be high enough to require a second manufacturer, thus, Quanta will be responsible for 100% of the orders.
According to fresh reports from supply chain sources cited by Digitimes today, the next-gen Apple Watch will indeed be manufactured exclusively by Quanta.
Back in November, Quanta’s chairman was quoted as saying that Apple’s next smartwatch has an “end of Q2 2016” release time frame.
When it comes to the reason behind Apple’s decision to leave Quanta as the sole manufacturer, low-volume production could be the answer. The second-generation Apple Watch is expected to be thinner, and may include a camera so users can make video calls from their wrist.
The Apple Watch launched as the company’s very first smartwatch, coming in various models for different tastes and budgets.
Until then, Apple is expected to introduce revamped Apple Watch models in March, as more of a minor update before the Apple Watch 2.
However, the DigiTimes report lines up with recent news first reported by Mark Gurman that Apple is planning to reveal new Apple Watch hardware at an event in September.
