Roanoke churches pray for peace, unity on MLK Day
“I think it’s a blessing because the generation that’s coming up now, I don’t think they would be able to go through the things we went through at our age”.
“There is a completion in our hearts that says when we honor Dr. King and honor what he taught, it is doing the right thing for all of us”, Greg Depriest said. In remembrance of Doctor King, he and leaders of the Lighthouse are calling for organizations across the city to open their doors, hearts, and time to help the youth.
They marched as the words of Dr. King could be heard playing over the crowd.
It was a cold, windy and snowy march, but it wouldn’t have been a proper Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration without a little bit of adversity.
“It’s so nice to be standing here and not looking at that flag”, said Ezell Pittman, who attended most of the King Day anti-flag rallies since they started in 2000. I’ve told this story before. “We had to choose”, Clinton said. It capped more than a week of events under the theme: “Remember!” Residents said they are praying for peace in 2016. The Rev. R.A. Callies Sr., a San Antonio pastor and teacher, began leading small processions honoring King’s legacy shortly after the slaying, according to the MLK Jr. “A product of that sacrifice and a product of that hard work”, he said.
Only Clinton dealt directly with the flag. “We’re marching to show our solidarity not only with the people of America but the people in Macon”, said Daugherty. They believe the solution is for us to get more involved.
“All that he did wasn’t in vain because his legacy is still making changes in the way that we live today”, Early said.
Even young children learned about King.
