Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy celebrate Oscar nominations at ‘The Revenant’s
Its 12 nods include best picture, director, actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), and – again, somewhat surprisingly – a supporting actor nomination for Tom Hardy.
LONDON, United Kingdom-US actor Leonardo DiCaprio on Friday claimed to feel no nerves at the prospect of claiming his first Oscar for his role in “The Revenant”, saying he had “done the work” and could do no more. The best actress category is being led by double Oscar victor Cate Blanchett “Carol”, actress Brie Larson for “Room“, Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence for biopic “Joy”, Charlotte Rampling for “45 Years” and Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”.
The film will compete in a variety of categories, including Best Film, Best Director for Alejandro G. Iñarritu, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Supporting actor for Tom Hardy.
Similarly, Aaron Sorkin was not among the Adapted Screenplay nominees for “Steve Jobs”, despite winning the screenwriting prize at the Golden Globes on Sunday. The Revenant actor had been nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1993 drama What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. All with horses in the race are 20th Century Fox (“The Martian”, “The Revenant“), Walt Disney Co.
Will Smith, who stars in football injury drama “Concussion”, and Idris Elba from “Beasts of No Nation” were among the black actors who were not nominated this year.
The 88th Academy Awards will take place on February the 28th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Matt Damon plays NASA astronaut Mark Watney in “The Martian”, which has been nominated for six Oscars. This is the second nomination for George Miller, the director of the explosive apocalyptic thriller.
Sound editing: “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Martian”, “The Revenant“, “Sicario”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
However, the only gong it was revealed to be in line for was Original Screenplay.
As expected, Pixar’s “Inside Out” landed a best animated feature nod, as did the Charlie Kaufman-penned “Anomalisa”, “Shaun the Sheep Movie”, “Boy and the World” and “When Marnie Was There”.
It should be fun to hear how all this filters through the mind of Chris Rock when he hosts the show.
