Paris police open fire on auto at Tour de France barricades
There were security concerns ahead of the final stage of the Tour de France on Sunday when police reportedly opened fire on a vehicle that tried to smash through barriers at the Place de la Concorde.
The driver escaped after refusing to obey police near the Place de la Concorde, Paris police said.
Poignant said the auto rammed the barricades while they were being set up for the race’s finale. Officers opened fire on the auto, which ultimately drove away. He told the BFM television network no police officers were hurt.
Thousands gather in the Place and along the Champs Elysees to see the final leg of the Tour which ends on Sunday afternoon.
According to Reuters, the incident was minor, and is not being treated as a terror-related incident, rather just a refusal to comply.
The vehicle tried to crash through security barriers being set up for the Tour de France final, which will pass through the city later today.
Briton Chris Froome is expected to win a second Tour de France title later today after he managed to defend his overall lead in the 20th stage.
