`Revenant’ leads Academy Award nominations with 12
Sylvester Stallone is nominated for the best supporting actor award for his comeback performance as Rocky Balboa in Creed, having won a Golden Globe for the film last weekend.
In second place was dystopian action film “Mad Max: Fury Road“, with 10 nominations, followed by space blockbuster “The Martian”, about an astronaut stranded on the Red Planet, with seven.
The full list of best picture nominees consists of “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, “The Martian”, “The Revenant”, “Room”, and “Spotlight”.
Previous Oscar victor Aaron Sorkin was left out of the nominations for best adapted screenplay, despite winning the Golden Globe Sunday. This nomination made 25-year-old Lawrence become the youngest actress nominated four times. Eight movies will be vying for the top prize of best picture, including the oddsmakers’ favorite Spotlight. Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender, Eddie Redmayne and Bryan Cranston rounded out the non-diverse Best Actor category, according to the Associated Press.
“This comes after getting criticism a year ago for nominating 20 white actors and now we have 40 white actors in a row for the Oscars – and it’s a big problem for Hollywood”.

LONDON, United Kingdom-US actor Leonardo DiCaprio on Friday claimed to feel no nerves at the prospect of claiming his first Oscar for his role in “The Revenant”, saying he had “done the work” and could do no more. It’s his 50th nomination, extending his record as the most-nominated person alive. And while many thought “Straight Outta Compton” might earn a best picture nod, it will have to settle for a nomination for best original screenplay. Similarly, no women cracked the Best Director race – but, sadly, that comes as no surprise.ABC will air the Oscars live on February 28, with Chris Rock hosting.
As expected, Pixar’s “Inside Out” landed a best animated feature nod, as did the Charlie Kaufman-penned “Anomalisa”, “Shaun the Sheep Movie”, “Boy and the World” and “When Marnie Was There”.
