Families jump from second story to escape apartment fire
Two hurt in Garner apartment fireGarner Police told ABC11 the fire started in a mattress inside the bedroom of a first-floor apartment.
When crews arrived, they saw smoke billowing out of one of the main floor exits.
Fire investigators say they cannot rule out arson as the cause of the fire overnight at the Hidden Villas Apartments in Decatur.
Authorities said there were no fatalities in the incident and the extent of injuries for the two who jumped were unknown.
Efforts then turned to confirming the evacuation of all eight apartments as smoke had filled the entire building. The tenant of the apartment where the fire occurred was displaced, and the Red Cross assisted with a hotel stay.
The apartment was the only one damaged by fire, Horton said, but tenants were forced out of seven others by smoke and water damage.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday morning, Horton said.
