IN bus crash kills school principal, hurts 2 children
Ms Jordan was loved by her staff and the school community, Lawrence Township Schools Superintendent Shawn Smith said at a news conference. The two children rescued by Susan Jordan sustained non-life-threatening injuries but were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are now listed in “serious but stable” condition.
According to IMPD’s Kendale Adams, early indications appear this was a freak accident.
ABC’s IN affiliate reports that Susan Jordan was equally loved by her colleagues and her students. “She was here every day, never missed a day of work – just a phenomenal individual that truly cared about children”.
Two 10-year-old students also were hit by the bus. She says the driver is being interviewed.
There were 25 children inside the bus which struck Jordan, but all of them remain safe. Officials haven’t yet said how this happened, but they say the bus driver told them Susan Jordan pushed students out of the way of the bus before she was killed. Indiana State Police records show the bus passed its most recent safety inspection last week. “We ask for your thoughts and prayers for all involved in the tragic events of this afternoon”. Rita Reith (ryt) said the bus crossed over a curb and struck the three Tuesday afternoon. “This loss is going to ripple across our district of 15,000 students”, Smith said. The Benjamin Harrison Y is offering free “schools out camp” for Amy Beverland students since they are out of school today. We do not have all the details at this time, but the school district can confirm that that there was one fatality.
Police said four or five children were hurt and an adult died after the one-vehicle crash outside Amy Beverland Elementary School in Lawrence Township, The Indianapolis Star reported.
