Apple’s Safari browser crashing for some users worldwide
Twitter users are passing around a shortened link that directs your browser to CrashSafari.com, a site that does just what it sounds like: crashes Safari.
A temporary workaround is to disable “Include search engine suggestions”, but a permanent fix most likely has to come from Apple itself.
Some users say they have been forced to download the Chrome browser instead, which is made by Apple rival Google. The website overloads the Safari browser with a self-generating string of text that populates the address bar. This annoying link which is in circulation will cause very intentional grief.
It seems that for some odd reason, iOS and OS X users are reporting that today, their Safari app on either platform seems to be crashing out of the blue.
The crash is reported to be caused by a bug with the browser’s auto suggest and has affected iPhone and iPad users worldwide.
If you’ve experienced issues with Apple’s Safari Web browser Wednesday morning, you’re not alone.
The iPhone heats up significantly as it tries to handle the code, and is then forced into a reboot. Going to the website in Safari crashes iOS. While the site is specifically meant to crash Safari, those running other browsers should also beware, as it seems like this prank isn’t always Safari-specific.
People on Twitter have confirmed that the link is affecting both iPhone and Android phones, and that it’ll open and operate on Safari and Chrome as well.
Although the crashsafari.com link should be fairly easy to avoid, Hypponen warned that some people are using link shorteners like bit.ly and ow.ly to disguise the link.
