Only Clinton dealt directly with the flag, crediting Governor Nikki Haley and fellow Republicans with working with black rights group NAACP after the church shooting and choosing King’s legacy over hatred.
Scott described that day: “Lieutenant came out and asked, ‘why do you have those black men lined up?’ He said, ‘well, we thought we were going to have a riot'”.
Despite the resistance King and his fellow freedom fighters faced, Daniels said, it was King’s courage and determination that inspired thousands to stand with him, to march with him and to force change, regardless of the dangers they faced. In Minnesota, a rally against police brutality was planned. But dozens made the several-block march from the Douglass High School gym to the Second Missionary Baptist Church. Moments later, Congressman Cedric Richmond (D) gave the keynote address while others looked on, remembering King and his legacy.
“Visitors coming through they’re looking at MLK and they want to see something, we want them to be proud of city”, says Mitchell.
