Met Offices issues rain weather warning for West Yorkshire
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of rain between 3am and 6pm.
In Edinburgh, a man travelling on a bus was injured when a piece of falling masonry smashed through one of the vehicle’s windows on Nicolson Street.
Many places saw record river levels during the recent flooding, including the River Aire in Leeds, the rivers Calder and Ribble, affecting places such as Whalley, Hebden Bridge and Ribchester.
Storm Frank brought torrential rain, flooding, power cuts and winds as high as 70mph to western parts of the UK.
But instead of heavy snow, severe weather warnings have been put in place predicting heavy rain across the United Kingdom, especially Scotland, the north-west of England and parts of Wales.
Now there are no warnings issued by the Met Office but with the ground already soaked there’s a strong possibility of surface water appearing on many Sussex roads, causing problems for drivers.
Severe gales and storm force winds are expected in exposed coastal areas on Tuesday morning bringing gusts of up to 75 miles per hour, while exposed areas of Scotland could see winds of over 80 miles per hour.
It said: “Rain will be heavy and persistent at times during Tuesday and into Wednesday”. The measures include carrying out work on the wider Ullswater valley in Cumbria, as well as in Appleby, Keswick, Cockermouth and Glenridding.
“We’re deploying temporary defences, we have further military personnel on standby”.
While it is set to weaken as it crosses the Atlantic, snow will turn to heavy rain as it hits Britain, with the threat of floods.
“There remains some uncertainty with the exact location of the areas at risk of the heaviest rain, and as such, this warning will be updated in the coming days as confidence increases”.
“EA teams have been helping communities recover from the severe floods over Christmas”. ‘These are quite wet areas and they are susceptible to flooding’. That means homeowners in Lancashire and Cumbria, which were among the worst.
“The west of Wales could also be hit by strong winds and large waves so again, the advice to people is to avoid the sea front as this could be unsafe”.
Elsewhere, pupils and staff at a primary school were evacuated by boat after the building was affected by flooding.
