This year the ceremony’s theme will be Don’t Stand By, with an emphasis on the people who have resisted oppressive regimes and rescued others from the genocides instigated by them.

Cllr Malik, Mayor of Hounslow, said: “Hounslow Council is proud to host this event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day”.

He said the activities of Islamic State (ISIS), Al-Qaeda and other extremist groups should be a wake- up call for all democratic countries to brace themselves up for any eventualities, noting that the Holocaust started in a similar way but the world failed to recognise and curtail it. Sadly, the simple answer is because too many stayed silent.

The programme will be screened on BBC Two at 7pm tonight, and will be presented by Mishal Husain, from Radio 4’s Today programme.

Tweeddale MP David Mundell this week signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, in doing so pledging his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who were murdered by the Nazis as well as paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people.
