Jets reach $324G settlement with Flight Crew cheerleaders over wage theft lawsuit
The Jets reportedly will have to shell out roughly $324,000 to their cheerleaders in order to finally put a class-action lawsuit to bed.
The cheerleaders, known as the Jets Flight Crew, complained they were not compensated for required practices and had to pay their own work-related expenses, including makeup, hair, and transportation.
According to the report. each of those past and present New York Jets cheerleaders will receive between $2,559 and $5,913. The cheerleaders reportedly filed the lawsuit over unpaid wages, claiming that they were not paid for non-game appearances or practices.
The success of the Jets cheerleaders in receiving a high-profile settlement likely sets the stage for further court battles as the various groups seek fair compensation. Hers is naturally curly, so she had to have it straightened.
“The Jets deny the claims and the parties have agreed to a settlement to avoid the expense, time and distraction of litigation”, the statement read.
The cheerleader’s attorney, Patricia Pierce, used the rates for games and special events to argue that the actual hourly pay was well below the minimum wage. Diane Savino (D-S.I.) and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-Calif.), to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell calling on him to set decent pay standards for cheerleaders.
Over the past few years, National Football League cheerleaders have begun to push back against their truly absurd working conditions-the Oakland Raiders settled for $1.25 million in 2014, the Bengals for $255,000 in 2015, and recently the Buffalo Bills cheerleaders were granted class action status.
Senator Loretta Weinberg sponsored a bill earlier this month that would officially extend employment protections offered through New Jersey law to cheerleaders of professional sports teams. However, as part of the major settlement, the New York Jets reportedly made no admission of “any liability of wrongdoing whatsoever”.
