Senate Democrats push to address Flint water crisis
She wasn’t the only one. The problems in Flint occurred when the city switched the source of water entering its pipes. According to Interim Director Keith Creagh, “we can say that things are trending better”. “My youngest daughter is nearly two”. In Flint, Mich., where the municipal water supply has been contaminated with lead, undocumented immigrants have been turned away from getting emergency water at distribution centers because they couldn’t produce driver’s licenses. It can lead to conditions such as a lower IQ and attention problems. Very high levels of lead exposure-if not quickly recognized and treated- cause convulsions, organ failures, comas and deaths.
Meanwhile, union members have been helping out Flint residents.
She says the people in Flint should not be paying for water they can’t use.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday his caucus will push for votes this week to respond to the risky lead crisis in the Flint, Michigan, water supply.
Earlier Wednesday, the pair, along with Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., proposed separate legislation to clarify the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to notify the public if a danger from lead is in their water system. Republican Governor Rick Snyder used the recession and the fiscal crises of cities like Detroit and Flint as an excuse to attack public sector workers and appoint emergency financial managers in these communities. Governor Snyder gave his memorandum on what the city needs to do, not only in the short term, but long range. The lead moves into their soft tissue-liver, kidney, brain, and lungs-and settles in their bones.
An archway on a planter straddles the Flint River in downtown… “What has happened to us should never happen to anyone again”. Residents are grateful for water bottle donations, but also stressed the need for new pipes in the town. It may even cause genetic changes in their grandchildren, according to a study released by Wayne State University researchers in October.

The national debate stirred by high levels of lead discovered in the water supply in Flint, Mich., has flowed into Philadelphia.
“It’s something I don’t think anybody expected it to be as big as it is now”, Cooper said, referring to the water crisis. Small demonstrations were organized by Flint residents – many calling for Governor Snyder’s resignation. Many have behavioral issues that surprised the 25-year veteran last fall.
Pastor Witherspoon says overall they’ve collected more than 6,000 cases of water for Flint. Snyder also states they need to map out the city’s pipes to find out where the lead lines are and replace those. However, because blood tests can reveal levels of lead within a person’s system, the tracking of this byproduct is possible.
“We’re not gonna guess”.
Tiana Lankford is working on that assumption. “But we’ll get it there, however long it takes”. In the harder moments, she feels guilty. As a result, people in it have to figure out how to fend for themselves. “If you were to take Philadelphia Water Department protocols and go to Flint, Flint would probably pass the federal requirements with flying colors”.
