Raonic stuns former champion Wawrinka
“For sure he will have some chance to go far in this grand slam”. She’s now into the quarterfinals against another unseeded player, Johanna Konta of Britain.
“I’m sitting this one out”, she said. “I wasn’t really feeling great, wasn’t moving well”.
Indeed the match was packed with attacking play, both men hitting many more winners to errors: Wawrinka made 52 to 31, as both fought to take control of the front of the court.
Also through to the final eight are last year’s victor, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who is to face Kei Nishikori, as well as four-time champion Roger Federer, who will be up against Tom Berdych.
Murray put the medical emergency behind him but it was a scrappy match, as he broke Tomic’s serve six times and dropped his own serve four times. I was talking to myself after every single point nearly from the first point through till the last, which was obviously not ideal. From that moment, it was simply a matter of Raonic doing what he does best, nearly not required when he brought up a match point on the return game.
Australian Open: Gael Monfils has moved into the quarter finals with a victory over Andrey Kuznetsov.
Next up for Murray will be No. 8 David Ferrer, a two-time semifinalist, who held off No. 10-seeded John Isner 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
After the match during her on-court interview, Azarenka was more concerned with the outcome of another sports contest: the Denver Broncos vs. New England Patriots AFC championship game. My prediction is a four set Monfils win 6-4 3-6 7-6 6-4.
RAONIC VS. MONFILS: Raonic hasnt beaten Monfils in two previous matches, although that was in 2011 and 2013.
She’s now the first British player since Durie in 1983 to advance to the quarterfinals in Australia.
He would go on to serve out the set and match to book his spot in the Australian Open final eight for a second consecutive year.
Raonic – the Canadian 13th seed – underlined his threat by upstaging 2014 champion Wawrinka 6-4 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.
The big-serving Canadian displayed some more depth to his game, as he was coming to the net a lot in the second set and showed off some outstanding volleys, giving Wawrinka a lot of trouble.
Fourth-seeded Wawrinka fell to Raonic while No. 2 seed Andy Murray cruised to another straight set victory. “Always been risky with his serve, with his game”, Wawrinka said.
The men’s draw saw something of a shock as the second week of the 2016 Australian Open got underway on Monday, with world No. 4 Stan Wawrinka losing out to Milos Raonic in the fourth round.
Monfils delighted the Margaret Court Arena crowd with his acrobatic game, including a full-stretch dive that resulted in him needing an injury timeout for treatment on his right hand.
Raonic reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2014 and he has struck form again in Australia, out-powering Wawrinka with 82 winners and 24 aces.
