Arkansas ends No. 5 Texas A&M’s streak with 74-71 win
Yet another top-five team has bitten the dust; this time it was No. 5 Texas A&M who fell victim to an un-ranked team, as the Aggies lost at Arkansas on Wednesday night.
The defeat ended a 10-game winning streak for the Aggies, who were ranked the highest they had been in school history.
Texas A&M was attempting to win its eighth consecutive conference game, its most since the school won seven in a row as a member of the former Southwest Conference during the 1979-80 season.
It wasn’t meant to be. Jalen Jones averages 17.5 points to lead the TAMU.
Texas A&M head coach Billy Kennedy expresses frustration with a call in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016.
Arkansas coach Mike Anderson said the win over the Aggies was a sign of maturity and a step in the right direction.
Caruso, who ended the night with 10 points, also struggled with foul trouble.
“We’ve got a tremendous chore in front of us, but it’s an opportunity”, Anderson said. “Tonight, we finished and we finished against an outstanding (team)”. Down 74-71, freshman guard D.J. Hogg had an opportunity to tie it with a 3-pointer as time expired, but the shot missed off the back iron. I can’t say enough about him. “But when he let it go, it’s nearly like, ‘No.’ With our luck, it would have hit the shot clock and went in”. It’s also made Kennedy’s job of preparing his team for Arkansas (9-10, 3-4) – which A&M routed 92-69 on January 2 – all the more hard.
Texas A&M committed 13 first-half turnovers and trailed 40-33 at halftime, but took a one-point lead three times in the second half – the last coming when a pair of free throws by Davis produced a 60-59 advantage.
Arkansas regained the lead for good on a floater by Manuale Watkins, and Anton Beard and Hannahs hit free throws in the final minute to help secure the win.
“Last two games have been bad, ” he said, according to CasualHoya.com and reported by ESPN.com.
The Razorbacks forced 21 turnovers – nine above the Aggies’ season average – and converted them into 15 points.
Arkansas improved to 7-3 vs. AP top-five teams at the 23-year-old venue. When going for at least 20 three pointers in a game this season, Arkansas is an even 1-1, while Texas A&M has a superb record of 13-2.
No. 5 MARYLAND 89, PENN STATE 53: In State College, Pennsylvania, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 25 points as the Terrapins (18-2, 7-1 Big Ten) routed the Nittany Lions.
No. 4 BAYLOR 69, TEXAS TECH 43: In Waco, Texas, Nina Davis scored 12 of her 18 points in the third quarter and the Bears (20-1, 7-1 Big 12) extended their Big 12 record with a 16th straight 20-win season.
