Rick Perry endorses Ted Cruz for GOP nomination
Former Texas Governor and two-time presidential candidate Rick Perry endorsed Sen. “That appears to be down to two people”.
“You’ll have with Ted Cruz that same result of, senators and others in the Washington establishment that are mad at him, find him to be hard to work with, they will find a way to work with him because they know he means what he says he means”, he said.
Perry – who abandoned his own 2016 presidential bid last September – said Cruz “has proven that he is ready to serve as Commander-in-Chief on day one”.
Cruz’s campaign has suffered blows in Iowa over the last week. The endorsement isn’t without qualifications, though, the first being that Perry views the only alternative to be Donald Trump.
Perry added that he learned through their recent time together that Cruz is “probably the best listener that I’ve ever been around in the political world”.
In the past week, Sarah Palin endorsed Trump’s campaign, and the influential Iowa newspaper the Des Moines Register endorsed Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Trump also leads the Republican field by double-digits nationally and in the nation’s second contest in New Hampshire, so his opponents see Iowa as a crucial state in which to stop the real estate mogul from gaining early momentum.
“It is in his political interest to get rid of David Dewhurst and get him out of Austin and send him somewhere else”, Cruz told reporters following a televised debate. Former GOP candidates Bobby Jindal, Scott Walker and George Pataki have yet to endorse.
