Teens die after reportedly drinking racing fuel and Mountain Dew
Logan Shane Stephenson, 16, was found dead in his bedroom in Robertson County on January 21. USA Today reports that within minutes of arriving at the scene, authorities were then called to the home of Stephenson’s unnamed friend, who was rushed to the hospital and was in a coma before dying Monday afternoon.
The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement this morning regarding the second teens death.
Two other boys came forward to admit to the authorities the four of them had drunk Dewshine on Wednesday night in the town of Greenbrier.
Two other teens went to the emergency room after drinking the mixture, but have been released and deemed OK.
Investigators say they had never heard of anyone using racing fuel to get high before.
It should be noted that there is also a variant of Mountain Dew with the same name, sold commercially as a cane sugar version of the soda, and is not related in any way to the deaths of the teenagers. “We have received information they may have been drinking this mixture”, Chief Smith told reporters on Tuesday.
Racing fuel has a very high alcohol content, and can be fatal if consumed. We have to try to make sure that adolescents are aware of the toxicity.
Health officials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have notified the Department of Health about the situation, Seger said.
The Greenbrier Police Department identified the deceased as Logan Stephenson, 16, and J.D. Byram.
On behalf of Robertson County Schools, I want to express our honest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the parents and families of two Robertson County Schools students who tragically lost their lives recently.
Knowing that the incident occurred can provide some benefit to the community but we are asking that any comments made be done so with the family of both boys in mind.
