No injuries as fire closes New Orleans’ historic Canal St.
Fox 8 Live reported that it caused a window to break and that’s when an employee in another building noticed the fire and reported it to the New Orleans Fire Department.
The chief said their main concern was to keep the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
Flames were no longer visible by mid-morning but firefighters continued to spray water on the structure and an adjacent building where the fire had spread.
Resident Michael Mallin said fire alarms in the apartment building went off about 3:30 a.m.
The New Orleans Fire Department, in conjunction with the Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives and the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, made an arrest Wednesday in the fire that resulted in a six-alarm blaze in the 1000 block of Canal Street.
No injuries were reported in the early morning blaze, but at least four businesses were destroyed before firefighters could extinguish the flames.
Firefighters say they’re pretty sure they know how the fire started, and it’s not considered suspicious right now.
Firefighters in New Orleans continue to battle a stubborn six-alarm fire in buildings on historic Canal Street. Officials are assessing damage to the building – and whether Mardi Gras parades that start Friday will have to be re-routed away from the structure.
The first floor of the involved buildings housed businesses including a cell phone store, a beauty shop and a dress shop.
Several aerial master streams are being used with hoselines to knock down the fire, which has engulfed all floors of the building.
