A Beloved School Principal Died Saving Her Students From a Bus
Students at Amy Beverland Elementary School are picked up after an accident that saw a bus waiting outside the Indianapolis elementary school suddenly lurched forward and strike them.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indianapolis elementary school principal was seen pushing several students out of the way of an oncoming bus before the vehicle fatally struck her, authorities said Tuesday. Jordan was pronounced dead at the scene after an accident occurred near Amy Beverland Elementary School, where she has served as principal for more than two decades, according to the Indy Star.
The bus driver told firefighters that she saw Jordan push several students out of the way as the bus suddenly jolted over a curb.
Schools in Lawrence are not in session Wednesday as students and staff mourn Jordan.
Indiana State Police detectives were investigating the deadly accident, but the bus did not appear to have any mechanical problems and had been inspected last Friday, according to NBC station WTHR.
“Quite frankly, ladies and gentleman, we are talking about a legend”, Shawn A. Smith, superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, said of Jordan at a news conference at the school.
The two 10 -year-olds Jordan saved were taken to the hospital after the incident with non-life-threatening injuries. A woman puts up a cellphone to her ear while standing by the site of a bus accident at Amy Beverland Elementary School in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016.
The bus driver and 25 students on the bus were uninjured.
“A is for awesome, because you’re an awesome principal”, one student said. At the end of the video, the credits read “We love you Mrs. Jordan!”
School is canceled until Monday for Amy Beverland and the learning center.
While she was hailed as heroic after her death for the way she sacrificed herself to save others, Jordan knew in life how much she was truly admired.
“I’m sure that I have never had and will never have a boss who is as supportive as she is”, one teacher said.
Memorials dotted the Lawrence Township community where the school is located.
“Every time I think about it I’m heartbroken, mainly for my daughter, because such an important role model in her life is gone”, Kille told CNN affiliate WISH.
This was a “freak accident”, Indianapolis Metro Police Sgt. Kendale Adams said after Tuesday’s crash.
