OR man files lawsuit against fantasy sports sites
The Florida Legislature put its stamp on a plan to legalize daily fantasy sports games Wednesday as two key committees approved a plan to impose regulations on the sport that mirrors the way the state regulates arcade games.
Negron, who will take over as Senate president after the November elections, said his proposal is aimed at making sure that people who participate in office pools – or who play the online games – don’t get into trouble. Peck’s representation argues that the games do not require skill and that the outcomes are largely determined by chance and what is considered “return casino-type odds”. This week, the Texas attorney general declared that daily fantasy sports games are likely illegal in that state.
Some other states are also considering the exclusion of college sports, said Scott Ward, who testified on behalf of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association and the industry’s two leading companies, DraftKings and FanDuel. For example, participants playing fantasy sports contests select a team of real-world athletes and accumulate points based on how their players perform in actual games.
However, according to Legal Sports Report, Madigan’s opinion released in December included assertions that DraftKings and FanDuel should stop doing business in IL.
There were three new provisions that committee members asked the sponsor to add to the bill. They allege the games are a form of online gambling outside state laws.
They’re evenly divided on daily fantasy sports contests, which face heightened scrutiny nationwide as states weigh whether the games constitute illegal gambling. Meanwhile, Missouri lawmakers are now working with industry leaders to create legislation that would clarify state law regarding fantasy sports contests.
“I think that now that fantasy sports is clearly on the radar, it is now woven into the whole dialogue of gaming”, Bradley said.
The ads are flashy and the industry is booming, as sports fans like Local 5 Producer Joe Horning head to fantasy sports websites – Draft Kings or FanDuel – to play in their one week leagues with the possibility of high payouts. All was well until recently, when government officials in NY deemed the practice of these companies as illegal sports betting.
