Biden calls GOP 2016 field ‘gift from the Lord’
Republicans have more seats to defend, 24 to the Democrats’ 10, and many of those GOP seats are in states President Barack Obama won, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Appearing before House Democrats at a retreat in Baltimore, Obama said the country is “doing a lot better” than when he took office, citing progress against Islamic State forces and curbing Iran’s nuclear program as well as lower gas prices, 18 million people gaining health insurance and 5 percent unemployment.
But as Obama spoke at this year’s retreat Thursday, he stood before a far smaller and less popular audience: 188 Democratic lawmakers in a minority caucus with virtually no chance of moving back into power in the November elections.
Continuing to weigh in on 2016, the president also slammed recent Republican talk of America’s progress during the primary campaign season. “As Democrats”, he said, “we believe in science-I know it’s a radical proposition”.
In an energetic speech to House Democrats in Baltimore on Thursday, Biden urged members to run on Democrats’ achievements over the last seven years and their contrasts with Republicans. “We’re trying to get to a quantum leap on the path to a cure”, Biden wrote.
Biden joked to House Democrats that he doesn’t know which Republican to root for, though he didn’t refer to any by name. Tonight I have an announcement to make about the presidential race.
Biden has never hid his feelings about Trump, calling his immigration message “sick” over the summer and railing against the Republican candidate’s plan to bar Muslims from entering the country.
“I’m confident we’ll win back the Senate, and I think we can make great inroads and maybe even win back the House”.
Still, the party faces an uphill battle to recapture capture a House majority. He said part of the reason is that Obama got European allies “to pony up”. “And on the other side, other than some slogans, you do not hear a single policy that they’re putting forward that you can say would help middle class … or working-class families”. A prodigious fundraiser, Pelosi held 205 fundraisers in 35 cities.
