GameStop, Insomniac Games will duet with ‘Song of the Deep’
Insomniac Games is partnering with GameStop for its next release, a “Metroidvania“-styled game set underwater”.
Song of the Deep is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this summer and will retail for $14.99. The game costs $15 and can also be downloaded from PSN, Xbox Live, or Steam.
The game itself focuses on the main character Merryn and her adventure under sea to find her lost father. Tales of merrow, fomori and other creatures of Irish myth have guided Merryn to sleep all her life – but everything changes one fateful night when dad never returns to their home in County Clare. She builds a rickety submarine to search for him beneath the waves.
Nearly all of Merryn’s upgrades are centered around the submarine.
Centering on the story of Merryn, Insomniac’s experimental release is the passion project hatched by Chief Creative Officer, Brian Hastings.
“Her journey in Song of the Deep is about courage and discovery in a haunting and lonely world”, says Hastings. Song of the Deep is a 2d Metroidvania-style game according to Insomniac. This is the first time that GameStop has served as a publisher, and will be using their retail location as an extra incentive. Stanley is the senior vice president of marketing and sales at GameStop. The publisher even agreed to let the developer retain full creative control over the IP, something which is very important to the studio. That’s why you see the company trying new things like publishing. Its core business models are the selling of pre-owned products and customers trading in their old games towards the purchase of newer titles. Are you interested in playing Song of the Deep? If the game’s website is any indication, it seems like the title’s main message will be about overcoming adversity, no matter who the person is.
