Here’s how Jeb Bush turned $100 million into single-digit support
At Thursday’s Republican presidential debate, they took a different tack – sniping back and forth in a way that laid bare that they’d both changed the way they talk about a path to citizenship. Kelly asked after playing multiple video clips of Cruz. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has released his final Iowa TV spot.
Cruz was also grilled on the immigration reform bill at the debate, for an amendment he has since touted as a “poison pill” to kill the legislation.
“This is the lie that Ted’s campaign is built on, and Rand touched upon it. That he’s the most conservative guy and everyone else is a RINO”, Rubio said, using an acronym for “Republican in name only”.
“I think Bernie Sanders is a good candidate for president – of Sweden”, Rubio said at the debate.
“You know, the amendment you’re talking about is one sentence, it’s 38 words”.
But the leader of one veterans group says he doesn’t want any donations from Trump’s fundraiser. “I’m going off what Ted Cruz’s campaign was saying a few weeks ago”.
Rubio said that Bush used to support a path to citizenship – to which Bush said, “So did you”. “The bill would involve legalization”, Paul said.
“The way Rubio wins SC, the thinking goes, is if he clears the establishment lane of competitors – Chris Christie, John Kasich, and Jeb Bush – so that center-right Republicans can consolidate behind him to defeat Trump and Cruz”, reports National Review’s Tim Alberta. Then, the former Florida governor who was once considered a mentor to Rubio in the state said his former protégé “cut and run” because the measure wasn’t popular.
Ironically, the candidate who claims credit for turning immigration into such a hotly contested topic, Donald Trump, boycotted the event and wasn’t onstage.
