Verizon prepares for Super Bowl 50 with $70m network upgrade
The NFL broke its tradition of using Roman numerals for the Super Bowl and branded its 2016 championship game as “Super Bowl 50” instead.

SAN FRANCISCO When it comes to Super Bowl 50, San Francisco wants what the city of Santa Clara has already gotten – but it’s not the game.
AT&T has also upgraded or deployed new DASs at 26 other locations, including the airports in San Francisco and Oakland and the the convention centers in Santa Clara and San Francisco. It looks like “Super Bowlli”, a cutesy nickname that the Super Bowl’s little sister calls it. Or like maybe the Super Bowl married Jet Li and hyphenated their last names.
More than 75,000 football fans are expected to descend on the San Francisco metropolitan area for the February 7 Super Bowl.
San Francisco is playing host to week-long festivities leading up to the big game.
The greatest expense will come from the city’s transportation department, which expects to spend around $2.3 million.
Nathan Ballard, a spokesman for the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, said the committee met with the city attorney’s office Wednesday and will modify the banners so that they are compliant with city law.
The skyscraper ads are “decor”, he says, similar to the balloons or streamers that announce a party – and what is the Super Bowl except “a global party”?
“We’ve done testing of all facilities to make sure the right plans are in place in case there are issues”, Finkelstein said.
Regardless of how we got here, we’re here now, and both Kim and Peskin are insisting that we shouldn’t throw in the towel just yet.
Hotel rooms in San Jose, which typically average about $167 this time of year are now going for $350, said Laura Chmielewski, vice president of marketing for Team San Jose. Previous Super Bowls had to offer minimum seating for 70,000, “but with new stadiums, we’re not tied to that number as we had been in the past”, Finkelstein said.
Verizon’s Super Bowl engineering effort also included extra antenna deployments around the areas where the Super Bowl hardware, the Lombardi Trophy and the Super Bowl winning teams’ rings, will be on display.
