Hugh Freeze: Report: Ole Miss charged with rule violations
The NCAA will formally charge Ole Miss with violations in three sports, including football, according to a Yahoo.com report.
Sports that the school is facing about 30 violations.
It’s unclear how the allegations break down per sport or the severity. While the details of the infractions are not known at this time, the NCAA has investigated the school’s athletic department since 2014. Part of that investigation is with former Ole Miss lineman Laremy Tunsil – a former 5* recruit – who came under fire for accepting improper benefits from outside benefactors.
There’s bad timing, and there’s bad timing coming a few days before National Signing Day when Ole Miss is bringing in a fantastic recruiting class.
Potential punishments for the alleged violations, should Ole Miss be found guilty, are unknown at this time, but the MS football team is expected to be a force in the SEC once again in 2016 with a strong defense and quarterback Chad Kelly returning for his senior season.
Multiple sources told Yahoo Sports the MS football and women’s basketball programs are subjects of the investigation. Unless there is agreement on the facts and the case can be resolved by summary disposition, a Committee on Infractions hearing date will be established.
Mississippi’s football recruiting successes in recent years under Freeze have taken the Southeastern Conference by storm – and rankled some rivals.
Saunders coached at Ole Miss from 1999-2002 in 2006 and in 2010.
It was not the only controversy involving a star Ole Miss player last season. The junior was charged with marijuana possession.
