UConn’s Warde Manuel back at Michigan as athletic director
Manuel was hired as UConn’s athletic director in 2012.
During his press conference on Friday, Manuel said MI first contacted him about possible interest in the job back in December, and his reply was “hell yeah”.
The women’s basketball team also won the last three national championships, the last of which giving Geno Auriemma his 10th.
Two high ranking CT officials told The AP earlier in the day that the school’s athletic director, Manuel, had been offered the same job at his alma mater.
Hackett’s list of accomplishments is impressive for an AD whose tenure was never permanent.
Manuel, who was raised in New Orleans, earned a master’s in social work and an MBA from MI, and served as assistant athletic director and associate athletic director at the school before becoming AD at Buffalo in 2005. I mean, it’s a different job now than when he got here, and he had a lot to do with that. He’s also the 13th athletic director at MI. He’s been praised for hiring Jim Harbaugh, negotiating a contract extension for head men’s basketball coach John Beilein and inking a contract with Nike, among other things.
“That’s one of his legacies”, Connecticut President Susan Herbst said Wednesday.
“When I came back everybody had different logos on”, Ollie said.
MI has not hired experienced athletic directors in the past, but made the most of an opportunity to change that when it picked Manuel to run a department with a $151 million budget, 900 athletes and a staff of 350.
