Oculus Rift getting the most support from VR game developers
The company’s chief marketing officer, Marc Mathieu, made the announcement at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend; fitting, since Mashable reports more than 30 VR short films were being screened at the event this year. If you don’t already have Sony’s latest console, then you’re going to have to fork out for this as well as the headset itself.
“Actually, it is touted to be cheaper than the Oculus Rift”, as stated in the site.
The video game industry, among others, is expected to experience the most disruption from the VR revolution.
While the hype about virtual reality (VR) over-indexed at CES 2016, there’s good reason for network operators to be interested in the technology, not the least of which is all that traffic it could generate. Vive preorders will open February 29th before shipping in April. That’s because the Vive is essentially a VR headset for the Steam service (known as SteamVR).
The consumer version of the HTC Vive will likely include a front-facing camera that can be activated to show the real world, and ship with two small base stations that track your movements in “room-scale VR” (using HTC’s words). Lastly, it is far more approachable than other devices unlike the HTC Vive or Oculus, which have to be connected to a PC.
Those fundamental specs happen to be exactly the same as those of the HTC Vive, though the field of view in the headset from HTC and Valve is slightly taller. Previous year the survey highlighted that 7% of developers have been developing VR games, and that figure has now jumped up to 16%. It will be interesting to see which of the upcoming VR headsets makes the biggest splash. As its new name suggest, the PlayStation VR will be an accessory for the PlayStation 4. It seem to be doing well, the PS4 is crushing the Xbox One.
VR’s steep growth rates and innovation are sometimes compared to those of PCs and smartphones. It also features a super-low latency, according to Sony’s official site: “Low latency is crucial for a great VR experience, and we’ve reduced latency to less than 18ms, about half of what the first PlayStation VR prototype had”. The vast majority of the developers, amounting to 75%, stated that virtual reality would become a sustainable business.
