Clinton goes full McCarthyism, brands Sanders a Communist sympathizer
Bernie Sanders takes control of the Democratic race in the critical first-in-the-nation voting state, according to a new CNN/ORC poll released Thursday.
Clinton focused much of her fire on Sanders’ plan for universal healthcare, a single-payer system which would work like socialized healthcare in European countries and is well-liked among many progressive voters in Iowa.
Clinton said in Indianola, Iowa, Thursday that while she shares many goals with Sanders, such as covering as many people are possible with health insurance, he is too theoretical while she is pragmatic.
Introducing Clinton, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat from New Hampshire, highlighted her tenure as a secretary of state and before that in the Senate.
The Iowa caucuses now appear headed for a close finish, which is likely to hearten Sanders’s supporters heading into he key state of New Hampshire, where he holds a lead over Clinton.
Sanders’ rise has jolted Clinton, leading her to launch a flurry of criticism against the Vermont senator, whom she views as unelectable and a proponent of unrealistic policies. The wordless spot contrasts with a recent Clinton ad in New Hampshire about her experience and plans. Jeanne Shaheen, who has endorsed Clinton, used Sanders’ comments to energize the crowd for her candidate. While Sanders demanded the governor’s head, he noted, Hillary Clinton contacted the mayor and scrambled to help demand the money for a fix.
Cavuto said that many Democratic voters view Sanders in the mold of George McGovern, the far-left 1972 Democratic nominee who appealed to the party’s base but was routed by President Richard Nixon in the general election. Hillary’s the most qualified person, and as a bonus she’d be the first woman president.
She added: “I really don’t understand what he means by that”.
Clinton is also struggling with her favorability in Iowa, the pollsters reported. “Not one”, she said.
“Bernie Sanders, as everyone knows, has one of the strongest civil rights records in Congress. He doesn’t need lectures on civil rights and racial issues from David Brock, the head of a Hillary Clinton super PAC”.
And while 26 percent of likely Democratic voters said they were bothered by Clinton’s use of private email as secretary of state, another 71 percent said it is not of concern.
“Their support for terrorism, the anti-American rhetoric that we’re hearing from some of their leadership is something that is unacceptable”, Sanders said.
