Saturday at the Australian Open: 22nd major for Williams?
1 and 3 in the next women’s rankings.
Serena Williams will take aim at Steffi Graf’s Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam titles on Saturday when she plays the Australian Open final against Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is hoping to pull off a major upset.
“I was extra busy on my new collection that I’m starting”, said Williams, a some-times fashion designer, who is wearing one of own designs a neon-yellow crop-top with pleated skirt on the court in Melbourne. While it is a bit obvious, Kerber needs to get off to a good start in this one. “He can get one or two sets all of a sudden… and it’s tough to get back into it”.
That loss is still fresh in her memory, and she is taking nothing for granted against a player who won four tournaments a year ago – and credits her new-found form to inspirational words from Graf, her fellow German.
Djokovic says he struggled at times against Federer. It’s the heavily favored Serena Williams going up against the first-time major finalist Angelique Kerber to determine the victor of this year’s first Grand Slam event.
“I thought she played unbelievable in that match”, Williams said. Playing in their first major tournament together, the number seven seeds will face Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek in the final. “Having a two-set lead was comforting, but the match was a battle in the end”.
Federer said he wasn’t surprised by Djokovic’s early blitz.
She finished 50-2 and ranked No. 1 in the world.
“She needs to try and forget it’s a Grand Slam final”. She’s won her other five matches in straight sets.
“I definitely block it out”, Williams replied to a question about equaling Graf’s mark. Not only is the world No 1 over her disappointment at missing out so narrowly on the calendar year Grand Slam last season but she has also taken her game up to another level – and wants to continue dominating for years to come.
American tennis player Serena Williams celebrates a win against British Heather Watson during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London. Despite facing Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska in her quarterfinal and semifinal matches respectively, the world number one has showed complete dominance in her part of the draw. I was just standing there kind of watching her playing”, said Radwanska, calling the first set the best anyone had ever played against her. “I think so.
Williams’ win over fourth-seeded Radwanska provided another yet reminder of her dominance in the women’s game.
The Australian Open every January starts the range of tournaments towards achieving a Grand Slam.
She clubbed 42 winners to dispatch the No. 4 seed in their semifinal at Rod Laver Arena.
Speaking to the media on Friday in Melbourne, the 28-year-old said the match against Safarova was a turning point for her where she promised that she “will never let the pressure turn against me”.
Kerber, who beat Johanna Konta 7-5 6-2 in the semifinals, was asked if she would seek out Graf’s advice. Her powerful groundstrokes will surely be there, but the key here is the consistency. “She’s beaten me before, too, and pretty good”.
