Clinton puts pressure on Sanders to agree to new debate
With the West Wing as his backdrop, Sen.
Bernie Sanders of Vermont is beating Clinton 41 percent to 35 percent among Democratic millennials.
Clinton, who served as Obama’s secretary of state, and Sanders are locked in a tight race in the nation’s first caucus state, with polls showing Clinton’s once-formidable lead having evaporated.
The former Barack Obama campaign volunteer said the energy for Sanders exceeds what she saw in the 2008 campaign.
These issues weren’t the focus of the meeting, Sanders said, downplaying the differences as he stood in the driveway of the White House to talk to reporters.
“That’s what our campaign is about, it is thinking big”, Sanders said at a primary debate earlier this month. “I was on the floor of the Senate disagreeing with him over taxes”.
On trade, in 2012 Clinton stated “This TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) sets the gold standard in trade agreements to open free, transparent, fair trade, the kind of environment that has the rule of law and a level playing field”. Second, we asked whether they would favor or oppose each of several specific, current candidates running. Sanders has the edge with younger voters, men and those who would be first-time participants. “As our party’s nominee, I will defeat Hillary Clinton in November”, he said.
Sanders also discussed Monday’s Iowa caucuses, saying his campaign is “feeling really good about where we are”, but that in the end “what the Iowa campaign ends up being about is one word, and that is turnout”. The ad highlights Goldman Sachs’ role in the financial collapse of 2008 and says the company exerts undue influence in the political process through campaign contributions and speaking fees to politicians and former politicians.
“I think the public is reacting to uncertainty that people feel in terms of the economy, in terms of American strength overseas, in terms of just overall uncertainty in the political environment”, she said.
The discussion was sparked by an interview Obama gave to Politico’s Glenn Thrush in which the president purportedly could not hide his obvious affection for Clinton or the feeling she best understands the demands of the White House.
She predicted Sanders would win the state – “I’m seeing that degree of excitement and commitment from people”, she said.
In other words, no matter what happens in Iowa on Monday, Clinton’s advantages are noted to be too great for Sanders.
This means, he added, “she can govern and she can start here, day one”. Sanders has called for more debates.
The meeting with Obama had been on the books “for days”, Sanders’ spokesman Briggs told CNN. Many of his most sweeping actions have been accomplished through executive order, making the next president critical in carrying out his agenda.
Clinton greeted supporters but didn’t look at Karl, who was just a few feet away. “In other words, if Sanders prevails narrowly in Iowa or New Hampshire, his support among liberal whites and in college towns… would be entirely consistent with a scenario in which he also gets clobbered by Clinton nationally”.
That in itself is a big storyline in the 2016 campaign: how Mr. Sanders has narrowed the gap between himself and Ms. Clinton.
Earnest said Wednesday that Obama has consciously attempted to remain neutral in the Democratic nominating contest, but that he does plan to vote absentee in Illinois’ primary on March 15.
