Hingis, Mirza win Australian Open doubles title
Elsewhere, Mirza and women’s doubles partner Hingis, also top seeded at the tournament, won the title today, beating the all-Czech Olympic medal-winning pair of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.
It was the World No. 1 women’s doubles team’s 36th consecutive win and third straight Grand Slam victory after they pocketed the Wimbledon and US Open in 2015. “After the match, we talked and then came out together today and won”, she said.
This is what Mirza had said after the pair made it to the finals of the Australian Open.
Sania and Hingis entered the finals after a record 35th successive match win and will be looking to earn their eighth title on the trot. “I am also trying to improve my serve further”, she said.
Earlier in the day, mixed doubles third seeds Rohan Bopanna and Yung-Jan Chan were knocked out of the year’s first Major, losing their quarter-final 2-6, 5-7 in 55 minutes to Filipino-Slovenian pairing of Treat Huey and Andreja Klepac on Show Court 2. Later in the doubles, the fifth seeded duo of Karman and Pranjala lost 6-7(3) 5-7 to the Australian pair of Maddison Inglis and Jaimee Fourlis.
The set went its full distance and Sania-Hingis were at their dominant best in the tie-break, clinching it 7-1. The Czechs had defeated Mirza and Elena Vesnina to claim the 2011 Roland Garros before landing the 2013 US Open title.
They opened their 2016 campaign by winning titles in Brisbane and Sydney, and now Melbourne. I don’t really leave my house so much, even in Florida or L.A. or Paris.
American Coco Vandeweghe and Horia Tecau of Romania have advanced to Sunday’s mixed doubles final at Melbourne Park with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Slovenian Andreja Klepac and Treat Huey of the Philippines.
Mirza-Hingis had the better serving as they won 72 percent of their first serves compared to Pliskova-Goerges who only won 50 percent of them. “I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big “thank you” to the fans for their support over the years”.
